Help is on the way
Barrie is a lovely city with beaches and skiing. There are over 90 parks, many of which are right on beautiful Kempenfelt Bay.
The city was named after Sir Robert Barrie, who was in charge of the naval forces in Canada and frequently commanded forces through the city and along the Nine Mile Portage.
Barrie is famous for being the final destination for one branch of the Underground Railroad. In the mid-19th century, this network of secret routes allowed many American slaves to enter Barrie and the surrounding area. This contributed to the development (and name) of nearby Shanty Bay.
In 1846, the population was about 500. In the last census, the population had grown to over 136,000. For more information on Barrie services and amenities, visit www.barrie.ca.
